Forest Park: A St. Louis Gem

Celebrating 25 years in 2012, Forest Park is a much loved resource for St. Louis citizens. One half of the park was used for the popular St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904 (the Western half).  The World’s Fair Pavilion now boasts a wonderful view of the entire Park.  Forest Park is now home to more than 12 million visitors a year!  It is one of the largest parks in the United States, bigger than Central Park in New York City.

Things to Do

Forest Park is home to a variety of things to do, for people of all ages. Golf, nature walks, and a variety of other sports to entertain those looking for recreation. Water birds and many other aquatic species are shown off the first Saturday of every month, showing off some of the best urban birding in St. Louis.  Ice skating and fishing are prevalent, depending on time of year.  Forest Park is also St. Louis’s most popular spot for picnics. All picnic spots are close to the zoo, art museums, etc.

The Jewel Box

A Forest Park feature, the Jewel Box is home to many brightly colored flora, sponsored by the Flora Conservancy of Forest Park.  The Jewel Box is home to many a seasonal display of flowers, including Christmas and Easter, with tropical flora in the summertime. An aged St. Louis treasure, the Jewel Box underwent major renovation in 2002 and is now better than ever!

Other Cultural Institutions at Forest Park

Forest Park has the unique distinction of bringing St. Louis together- as home to some of the city’s major cultural landscapes.  The Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum, Science Center and the Muny Opera are all within walking distance of the park.  Forest Park is special because it is a “natural oasis” in a city surrounded by buildings, commerce, and industry. Whether you want to take a stroll, revisit history, or experience of one St. Louis’s hidden gems, take a visit to Forest Park.
